Academic/Non-Academic

I. For students who have completed OC's Preparing for Access to Careers and Education (PACE) Program

  • entry into the SAME program requires at least a 80% average in the PACE Program
  • a recommendation of the Adult Special Education (ASE) instructor and the receiving instructor.

OR

II. Applicants without PACE Completion

A. Students may directly enter the SAME program (as long as space is available) on the recommendation of the ASE instructor and receiving instructor if they:

  • meet PACE admission requirements
  • have an established record of student success behaviours
  • have clear and realistic vocational goals based on prior work experience in a filed directly related to the SAME Program

B. Documentation must include one of the following:

  • Psycho-educational assessment;
  • Educationally specific documentation from a physician or medical specialist.

C. Two letters of reference. This involves:

One letter from a previous instructor in ABE or ASE, or from a secondary school teacher. This recommendation must comment on the student's behaviours and attitudes including:

  • attendance and punctuality;
  • ability to complete work in an accurate and timely manner;
  • response to criticism;
  • interactions with instructors and peers;
  • strategies for coping with stress;
  • willingness to participate in class activities and group work.

One letter from an employment related agency, advocacy group, employer or work place supervisor. This recommendation must outline related work experience and comment on:

  • The suitability of the student for the chosen SAME Program based on strengths and abilities demonstrated in the workplace over a period of at least eight weeks.
  • Employability skills such as attendance and punctuality, willingness to work, ability to follow instructions, ability to cope with constructive criticism, and teamwork skills.

English Language Requirements

Summary

If English is not your first language, you must submit one of the following (minimum scores):

  • A TOEFL score of 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), or 79 (internet based)
  • An academic IELTS overall band score of 6.5
  • A Okanagan College English Language Assessment (OCELA) of 6
  • 70% in each of ELSE 060, ESLW 061 and ESLR 062 for admission to a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, Business Administration diploma, Commercial Aviation Diploma or Advance Culinary Arts diploma
  • 60% in each of ELSE 060, ESLW 061 and ESLR 062 for admission to Arts, Science, Computer Information Systems, and Engineering Technology programs
  • 70% in English 12 or equivalent for Business programs
  • 60% in English 12 or equivalent for Arts, Science, Engineering Technology, and most diploma programs
  • 50% in an English literature or composition course at a recognized university or college in Canada
  • Level 5 on the Language Proficiency Index for Business or Level 4 for Arts, Science, technology and most diploma programs
  • A degree or diploma from an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction
