1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade needed in bracket)

1. One of:

One of:

  • English Studies 12 (C+) or equivalents
  • English First Peoples 12 (C+)
  • IB (International Baccalaureate) English A1 or A2 (HL or SL) with a minimum grade of 3 (or C+)
  • AP (Advanced Placement) English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition with a minimum grade of 2 (or C+)
  • 3 credits of undergraduate English course (C-) from a recognized post-secondary institution where English in the primary language of instruction
  • A baccalaureate degree, or two-year diploma, or 60 undergraduate-level credits, at a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction (2.0 cumulative GPA)
  • Both KPU ESLT 0381 (B) and ELST 0383 (B)
  • Both ELST 0381 (B) and KPU placement score higher than ELST 0383 level
  • ENGQ 1091 (C) or ENGQ 1092 (C) or ENGQ 1099 (C)
  • KPU Placement Test into ENGL 1100
  • IELTS Academic score = at least overall 6.5, with 6.0 in each band (within the last two years)
  • Internet based TOEFL score = at least 88, with no sub score less than 20 (within the last two years)
  • CAEL score = at least 70, with no sub score less than 60 (within the last two years)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) score = at least 61 (within the last two years)
  • LPI score = at least level 5, with an essay score of 30 or higher (within the last two years)

Non-Academic

  • Portfolio (see website for details)
    • examples showing your creativity
    • examples of your drawing and three-dimensional skills
    • examples of using digital technology and computer skills
    • photocopies of transcripts or credentials
    • samples of your writing in the form of an academic paper
    • interview a registered interior designer and submit a paper outlining this interview/experience (500 words maximum)
    • resume 
    • three letters of reference
    • personal statement (500 words maximum)
  • attend the Portfolio Review and Interview Session 


Admission Advice
1. Once you have completed your application, you will receive instructions on how to submit your Portfolio through an online submission platform. More information on application process can be found here

2. To help you create the most effective portfolio possible, the School offers workshops, feedback sessions and open houses.  These sessions allow you to ask questions about the program and review portfolios of current students. For dates and times, click here

3. Eligible applicants who have met the application, documentation, and portfolio submission requirements will be contacted for an interview. During the portfolio and interview process, faculty members evaluate each applicant for suitability for admission based on the contents of the portfolio and results of an interview (including prior learning assessments). For detailed information about Interior Design as well as the interview and portfolio review process, visit the department's website

English Language Requirements

English is the primary language of study at KPU. Therefore, all applicants must be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of English language proficiency for their undergraduate, vocational or preparatory area of study. English requirements can be found here.

BC Transfer Student

Mature Student

At KPU, we proudly welcome students of all walks and ages. If you have not graduated from High School, have taken fewer than 24 post-secondary credits, and are 19 years of age or older, we can admit you as a mature student. Mature students bring a lot of experience and diversity into the classroom, and KPU will support you in achieving your personal and professional goals. International Student

Kwantlen Polytechnic University accepts applications from international students who meet the English Proficiency Requirement. All international undergraduate applicants are required to demonstrate English language proficiency prior to admission.
