This program satisfies the training standard set by the BC Industry Training Authority (ITA) for:

Horticulturalist, Landscape

ITA Source: 'Horticulturalist, Landscape' profile.

Description

Landscape Horticulturalists select, handle and use trees, shrubs and ornamental plants and turf grass for the design, development and maintenance of public and private landscaping spaces. This includes preparing soil, planting, cultivating, pruning and irrigating to maintain plant vigor. It also involves controlling plant pests through appropriate integrated pest management techniques.

The program combines technical and work-based training. It generally takes four years to complete.

The technical training is made up of four levels totalling 24 weeks (720 hours).  Each level is six weeks. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The work-based training totals 5280 hours. Based on a 30-hour week this involves 176 weeks of training.

For details about the Pan-Canadian Harmonization Initiative and recent changes to the program structure, visit the ITA website OPSN 2018 009 .
