COVID-19: UPDATE

Public post-secondary institutions in BC are prepared to welcome new and current students for classes in Fall 2020 through a variety of learning methods while continuing to adhere to public health guidelines.

In addition to their current services for students, institutions are also developing supports to ensure a smooth and successful transition into the new learning methods for their programs.

1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic/Non-Academic (minimum grade in bracket)

1. One of:

  • A related two-year diploma or associate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution (72% average), including at least 72% in a post-secondary English course
  • completed the requirements for the Peace Officer General Training program or equivalent, with at least 3 years of full-time service in a recognized public safety agency which would allow for 60 credits of Prior Learning Assessment be granted towards the completion of the Bachelor degree program
  • mature student status, with computer literacy and relevant work or volunteer experience (note: an in-person interview and assessment may be required) 
2. English 12 (C) or equivalent

Admission Advice

1. An interview and assessment may also be required.

2. Related work experience and/or study will enhance your application.

3. If English is not your first language, an appropriate Test of English will be needed:

  • TOEFL (220 computer, or 570 paper); or
  • IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 will be needed
  • equivalent

2) Institution Admission Requirements

Applicants also have to satisfy JIBC's institution admission requirements as listed below.

English Language Requirements

Summary

One of the following (minimum score):

  • A "C" grade in English 12 or English Literature 12 or equivalent 
  • A TOEFL iBT = 80 overall, with at least a score of 20 in each of the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing sections
  • An IELTS = 6.5 overall, with no band less than 6.0
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB) = 7 Listening, 7 Speaking, 7 Reading, 7 Writing
  • Canadian Academic English Language Test (CAEL) = 60 overall, with at least 50 on all subtests 
  • Cambridge Assessment English (CAE) = "C" in C1 Advanced 
  • VCC's ELSK 0815 and ELSK 0820 (with a grade of "Satisfactory" on both
  • A grade of 3 or "C" in Advance Placement (AP) English Language or Literature
  • A grade of 6 or "C" in International Baccalaureate English Level A (higher level)
  • An undergraduate degree from an English speaking post-secondary institution
  • Other equivalents may be considered by the registrar
