Admission to open-enrollment programs are offered on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis. Students are encouraged to apply early.

Fall Semester:  Applications open early October of the previous year

Winter Semester:  Applications open early February of the previous year

Summer Semester:  Applications open early June of the previous year

1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade needed in bracket)

1. One of:

  • BC secondary school graduation (or the equivalent in another school system)
  • One course short of BC secondary school graduation
  • 19 years old by the end of the first month of the first semester of attendance
  • 17 years old on the first day of the first semester of attendance and has not been in school for at least one year
  • Completion of a certificate or equivalent from a special needs program and has been in school for 12 years

2. English

One of:

  • English 12 (C)*
  • English 12 First Peoples (C)*
  • English Literature 12 (C)
  • Communications 12 (B)*
  • Technical and Professional Communications 12 (C)*
  • AP English Language or Literature (level 3)
  • IB English Language A (SL) (level 3)
  • Equivalent substitution (English Proficiency Requirement tab)

Admission Advice

1. If you are requesting transfer credit from another institution or submitting secondary school transcripts from outside of BC you must submit appropriate documents at least three months before the start of the program.

2. If you are missing some of the requirements for admission, Douglas College offers academic upgrading courses to help you get started.

English Language Requirements

Summary

One of the following (minimum scores):

  • a 'C' grade in English 12, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, or Technical and Professional Communications 12 (the mark is based on both the course and provincial exam)
  • a 'B' grade in Communications 12 (the mark is based on both the course and provincial exam)
  • a grade of 3 or a 'C' grade on Advanced Placement (AP) English Language or Literature
  • a grade of 3 or a 'C' grade on International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A (Standard Level)
  • Douglas College English Assessment
  • an essay score of 4 on the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) exam
  • TOEFL iBT score of 83
  • IELTS score of 6.5 overall (academic module only)
  • EIKEN Test of Practical English placement of Grade 1
  • CAEL overall and essay score of 60 (computer or paper based)
  • Cambridge English CAE score of 75 or 'B'
  • Cambridge English CPE score of 60 or 'C'
  • CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) Level 8 in each of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing 
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic score of 56
  • ENGU 0350 and 0360 – Mastery
  • ENGU 0355 - Mastery
  • ENGU 0356 - Mastery

  • ENGU 0450 - minimum grade "P" and 0460 - Mastery

  • currently enrolled or successfully completed a college-level course that transfers as a college-level English, Written Communications, Creative Writing or Literature course from an English speaking post-secondary institution (note: if the course has been completed, a minimum grade of 'P' is required)
  • currently enrolled in the BC Adult Graduation program including English 12 with at least a C grade (provincial exam is optional)
  • completion of an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking post-secondary institution
  • a GED Language Arts Writing and Reading score of 450
  • ABE English course equivalent to ENGU 0355 or higher

General Admission Requirements (All Students)

You are eligible for enrollment at Douglas College if you meet the General Admission Requirements along with the specific admission requirements of your intended program.

BC Secondary School (or equivalent)

If you have BC secondary school graduation or lack one course for BC secondary school graduation you may qualify for admission to Douglas.

You must also meet the college's English Language Proficiency Requirement and the specific admission requirements of your intended program.

Out-of-Province

If you have BC secondary school graduation or lack one course for BC secondary school graduation, you may qualify for admission to Douglas.

You must also meet the college's English Language Proficiency Requirement and the specific admission requirements of your intended program.

BC Transfer Student

You must meet the General Admission Requirements for Douglas College.

You may transfer from another institution with up to 75% of the credits required for a Douglas College citation, diploma, degree or university transfer program.

To receive transfer credit, you must submit an official transcript with your Application for Admission or Readmission along with a Transfer Credit Request form. A detailed course description may also be required before credit can be evaluated.

You are strongly recommended to request transfer credit at least four months in advance of your first semester of attendance. Requests for evaluation of credit received after this time may not be processed in time.

Out-of-Province Transfer Student

You must meet the General Admission Requirements for Douglas College.
