A "Welder Level C" is able to weld various steel and aluminum parts using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW processes, in the fabrication, construction, erection and repair of components or structures in plate and structural applications.

The format of the program combines in-school and work-based training. This training is normally offered over one year.

The in-school training part is 12 weeks or six weeks per level. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The work-based training totals 1000 hours. Based on a 40-hour work week this involves 25 weeks of training.

  • Semi-Automatic Welding (GMAW) (GMAW-P) (FCAW) (GMAW/MC)
  • Basic Metallurgy Relating to Production, Properties, and Weldability
  • Material Handling and Rigging Procedures
  • Reading Welding Drawings
  • Layout and Fabricating Components
  • Submerged Arc Welding Processes (SAW)

Advisor Tips

If you wish to challenge the requirements for the Welder C apprenticeship program you must:

  • have 2700 hours of directly related work experience
  • successfully challenge the BC Certificate of Qualification written exam
  • successfully complete the ITA practical exam

Completion of Welder Level C is a prerequisite for Welder Level B.
