Saw Filer

ITA Source: 'Saw Filer' profile.

Description

A Saw Filer fits all types of saws including circular saws, band saws, gang saws, chain saws and operate, repair and adjust saw sharpening equipment. They are also competent to bench all circular and gang saws including tensioning and welding cracks and teeth.

The optional "Benchperson" endorsement allows qualified Saw Filers to bench band saws, including the lining up of head rigs, grinding of band wheels and any other work usually performed by a Benchperson in the Lumber Manufacturing Industry.

The program combines technical and work-based training. It generally takes two years to complete.

The technical training is made up of two levels totaling 10 weeks. Level One is 6 weeks. Level Two is 4 weeks. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The work-based training totals 4200 hours. Based on a 30-hour work week this involves 140 weeks of training.

The optional Benchperson endorsement requires an additional 4 weeks of technical training and 1680 hours (56 weeks) of work based training.
