ITA Source: 'Lumber Manufacturing Industry - Benchperson' profile.

A "Lumber Manufacturing Industry - Benchperson" is a qualified Saw Fitter and Circular Filer who is able to:

  • bench all types of band saws (ie-inspect saws to make sure they are level; ensure that the saw is correctly adjusted for cutting; ensure proper tension to stand up to the demands of cutting);
  • maintain and align the components of band saw machine centres to ensure effective operation with the least amount of saw wear and wood waste;
  • use tipping and sharpening methods to maintain the specified tooth geometry of band saws;
  • maintain band saw benching equipment, tipping and sharpening equipment, and alignment tools and equipment.

The format of the program combines in-school and work-based training. It is normally completed in one year.

The in-school training part is four weeks. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.
