Non-Academic (for both elementary and secondary teaching options)

2. Applicant Profile form in an addition to the online application form to VIU. The Applicant Profile involves describing reasons for wishing to become a teacher and relevant life experiences. An incomplete Applicant Profile voids application to the program(s).
3. Competence in the areas of oral and written communications, interpersonal skills, computation and computer applications.
4. Criminal Record Check which VIU will process through the British Columbia Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, is required prior to placement in field experience and/or practicum placements. A check completed through the RCMP is not sufficient to meet the requirements.
Admission Advice (for both options)
1. You can apply to both elementary and/or secondary teaching streams/programs, but you are required to submit separate applications for each program. If you apply to both streams, you need to indicate your teaching preference (elementary or secondary) within the Applicant Profile.
2. You are required to submit official transcripts, including those for interim course work, from all post-secondary institutions you have attended (excluding VIU). Photocopies/faxed copies of transcripts are not acceptable.
3. Applicants to the secondary option will be considered in relation to provincial shortages in specific specialty areas. Eligibility for these secondary seats will be determined by undergraduate course work.
4. Enrollment in this program is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. Admission rankings are determined by a combination of grade point average (60%) and CASPer test results (40%).
5. To ensure applicants are suited to work in schools, the Faculty of Education may require additional screening to the satisfaction of individual school districts.
6. To meet the needs of the teaching profession, from time to time, it may be necessary to give preference to applicants with discipline specialties/focus areas in high need areas such as French immersion, Indigenous education and Special Education.
7. The Faculty of Education’s Access Initiative is designed to provide entry into the program for individuals who are members of groups in our society who have historically been under-represented in the teaching profession in BC. Applicants who wish to apply under the Access Initiative may identify themselves on the Applicant Profile.
8. Faculty of Education utilizes a variety of technologies, online services, and tools in providing an array of pedagogical experiences. Having an up-to-date laptop will be an asset to the student experience.
9. Application Information & Checklist (domestic applicants, international applicants) provides helpful application details.
