1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade in bracket)

1. One of:

  • high school graduation
  • equivalent

2. English 12 (B) or equivalent 

3. Math

Both:

  • Pre-Calculus 11 (C) or Foundations of Math 11 (C)
  • VCC Health Sciences Math Assessment (80%) or MATH 1054 (80%)

3. Biology 12 (C) or equivalent

4. NURS 1602 Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent (68%), completed within the past three years

5. Successful completion of certificate in one of:

  • Health Care Assistant (HCA)
  • Health Care Assistant (RCA)
  • Home Support/Resident Care Attendant (HS/RCA) 

6. Knowledge Assessment Examination (68%). You are exempt from this examination if you are a practicing HCA, RCA, or HS/RCA with a certificate from the BC Public Post Secondary System. (If applicants are unsuccessful on the exam the first time, they can rewrite the exam once).


Non-Academic

  • 600 hours of work experience, within the past two years, as a resident care attendant in a facility working with a group of old-age patients (confirmed by an employer's letter) 

Admission Advice

1. All applicants must meet English language proficiency requirement by satisfying one of the following:

  • 3 years of full-time face-to-face secondary or post-secondary education in an English peaking country where English is the primary language of instruction
  • IELTS (7.0 overall, with 7.0 in speaking, 7.0 in writing, 7.5 in listening and 6.5 in reading)
  • Canadian English Language Benchmarks Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) (8.0 in speaking, 10.0 in listening, 8.0 in reading, and 7.0 in writing).

2. On acceptance you must:

  • submit a successful Criminal Record Search;
  • submit a current CPR Certificate which includes the following:
    • Adult/Child/Baby CPR (one rescuer)
    • Adult/Child CPR (two rescuer)
    • Adult/Child/Baby (choking)
  • provide proof of a negative TB skin test or chest x-ray;
  • be properly fitted for a respiratory mask.

3. Updated immunizations [Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis, Polio, Measles, Mumps & Rubella, Varicella (Chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Influenza are strongly recommended].

4. It's recommended that you have:

  • good computer skills including working knowledge of word processing, e-mail, and internet searches;
  • any supportive courses in human biology, psychology, sociology, first aid or previous related work experience or education would be an asset.
  • a basic foundation in Math calculations of decimals, fractions and metric conversions;
  • the flexibility to adjust to early morning and evening practicum shifts, to a variety of clinical settings and to travel to different locations within the Lower Mainland.

You must meet the admission requirements of your intended program before your name is added to a waitlist or registered in a program.

BC Transfer Student

Students transfering between post-secondary institutions in B.C. may refer to the BC Transfer Guide to find program transfer credits or BC Articulation Handbook for entrance requirement equivalencies.

If you have prior post-secondary education that you want to transfer to VCC, you must make a formal request through the Registrar's Office by completing an Approval for Transfer Credit form and attaching all required documents. For more information call 604.871.7000.

Mature Student

You must be at least 18 years old (unless you have graduated from Secondary School) to meet the general admission requirement for VCC. In addition, specific program admission requirements must also be met.
