  • Face-to-Face: Program is fully delivered in class with face-to-face interaction

1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic

  • at least a Grade 5 reading level (Lesser qualified applicants may be admitted with the instructor's approval.)
Non-Academic
1. Participate in 2 screening interviews (to determine the applicant's suitability for the program):
  • first screening interview with the Student Services Assistant for Students with Disabilities 
  • if successful in the first interview, the applicant will participate in the second interview with the Retail and Hospitality Careers faculty member, which includes a hands-on assessment
2. Provide information through documentation and at the interviews to support assessment of the following admission criteria: 
  • a diagnosis or history that identifies a difficulty with learning
  • be comfortable in an alternative learning environment designed for students with disabilities
  • previous career exploration that supports training in the hospitality industry
  • demonstrated grade 5 reading level (by documentation of reading level, or through an informal VCC reading assessment)
  • be able to travel independently to the college and workplace
  • no emotional or medical concerns that would significantly impair learning or safety
  • ability to manage own medications
  • demonstrate appropriate personal hygiene and have the ability to independently attend to personal care needs
  • demonstrate desire and willingness to work in the retail and/or hospitality sectors, and perform tasks in an efficient and timely manner
  • ability to attend classroom and practicum on a full-time basis
  • willingness to work and perform program-related tasks with strength and endurance
  • good finger and hand dexterity for handling equipment
Admission Advice
Upon acceptance to the program, you may need to provide a successful Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Search) to meet the requirement of some practicum placements.

All applicants are required to demonstrate the appropriate level of English language proficiency to function successfully in an English-speaking classroom.

There are three types of requirements that applicants to VCC need to meet:

  • General requirements (completion of high school or be at least 16 years of age)

BC Secondary School (or equivalent)

BC Transfer Student

Students transferring between post-secondary institutions in BC may refer to the BC Transfer Guide to search course transferability.

If you have completed some post-secondary education at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at VCC. Students are responsible for initiating the transfer credit process by submitting a formal request (an Approval for Transfer Credit form) to Registrar's Office attaching all required documents. 

Out-of-Province Transfer Student

If you have completed some post-secondary education at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at VCC. Mature Student

You must be at least 18 years old (unless you have graduated from Secondary School) to meet the general admission requirement for VCC. In addition, specific program admission requirements must also be met.
