1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade needed in brackets)

1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. English

One of:

3. Biology 12 (C+) (completed within the past five years) or equivalent

4. A Medical Terminology course (70%)

Non-Academic

  • at least 50 hours of paid or volunteer experience working with people with cognitive, emotional, mental or physical disabilities as verified by a supervisor, employer or educational institute
  • attend a VCC Occupational/Physical Therapist Assistant Program information session
  • updated immunizations are strongly recommended

Admission Advice

1. The following will be required, upon acceptance to the program:

  • successful Criminal Record Check (CRC) through the Ministry of Justice (you are responsible for the cost of CRC)
  • proof of a current CPR - Health Care Provider Level (within the last 6 months)
  • proof of a negative TB skin test or chest x-ray
  • immunization record; Immunizations for the following are strongly recommended, and may be required for practicum placements:
    • Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DPT)
    • Polio
    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
    • Hepatitis B
    • Influenza (Flu vaccine) - required annually

2. It is recommended that you:

  • are able to work with people who have physical, emotional, mental health and/or cognitive challenges
  • are willing to provide physical and emotional support to clients
  • are in good health and physical stamina, including the ability to lift 15 kg and stand for a full working day.
  • have patience, empathy and a genuine interest in promoting the independence and well-being of others
  • have good observational and organizational skills
  • are able to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • are able to adapt and respond appropriately to changing situations
  • can listen, comprehend and clearly communicate in a complex, health care environment
  • are mature, trustworthy, reliable and dependable
  • have basic computer skills – email, word processing, internet searching

All applicants are required to demonstrate the appropriate level of English language proficiency to function successfully in an English-speaking classroom.

BC Transfer Student

Students transferring between post-secondary institutions in BC may refer to the BC Transfer Guide to search course transferability.

If you have completed some post-secondary education at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at VCC. Students are responsible for initiating the transfer credit process by submitting a formal request (an Approval for Transfer Credit form) to Registrar's Office attaching all required documents. 

Out-of-Province Transfer Student

Mature Student

You must be at least 18 years old (unless you have graduated from Secondary School) to meet the general admission requirement for VCC. In addition, specific program admission requirements must also be met.
