1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade in bracket)

1. VCC Health Science English Language Proficiency Requirement

2. The transferable equivalent of first-year university studies (ie - 30 credits) with at least a 3.0 ("B") cumulative grade point average (GPA). This work must include the following courses:

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology (including labs) (6 credits)
  • Chemistry (including labs) (6 credits)
  • English (6 credits)
  • Psychology (6 credits)
  • Introductory Statistics (3 credits)
  • Elective (3 credits)

Special Notes: If you have completed 2nd, 3rd or 4th year courses in the required subjects, the highest grades are considered in the GPA calculation.

Non-Academic

  • complete a physical dental exam from a licensed BC dentist before entering the program for legal reasons. (It is also preferred that applicants have their dental and dental hygiene healthcare complete and current.)
  • be physical and psychological healthy
  • be able to perform fine psychomotor skills as a dental hygienist. (Physical and mental demands of the profession may worsen back, wrist or shoulder problems. Materials used in oral health care may affect persons living with conditions such as latex sensitivity or other allergies.)

Admission Advice

1. On acceptance you must:
  • have current CPR Level C Certification;
  • have current certification in Emergency First Aid;
  • submit a successful Criminal Record Search;
  • provide proof of a negative TB skin test or chest x-ray;
  • submit a complete immunization record (forms may be obtained from the Registrar's Office)

2. If English is not your first language, you must successfully complete six credits of university-transferable English courses (C+ grade or higher in each course), or complete an English language assessment with acceptable test scores. 

3. The top 40 applicants with the highest grade point average will be selected to participate in an online candidate's questionnaire which assesses their knowledge of the dental hygiene profession; approximately the 22 applicants with the highest scores will be offered seats in the program.

4. The Downtown (City Centre) Counselling and Dental Hygiene departments hold information sessions in January, April, July and October. For dates and times, contact Counselling and Advising Services at 604.443.8453.

5. For applications for Fall 2021, official transcripts (of final and in-progress grades) must be received in VCC’s Registrar’s Office on or before February 19, 2021. All courses that are required for admission must be completed by the end of April 2021. Final transcripts must be submitted to VCC’s Registrar’s Office on or before May 21, 2021. BC Transfer Student

Students transfering between post-secondary institutions in B.C. may refer to the BC Transfer Guide to find program transfer credits or BC Articulation Handbook for entrance requirement equivalencies.

If you have prior post-secondary education that you want to transfer to VCC, you must make a formal request through the Registrar's Office by completing an Approval for Transfer Credit form and attaching all required documents. For more information call 604.871.7000.

Mature Student
