ITA Registration

Individuals who wish to begin an apprenticeship in this program must register with the ITA along with their sponsors. Application forms for all programs are available from the ITA website. Online registration is also available for most programs though the ITA website.

Construction Craft Workers (Labourers) work mainly on construction sites in residential, institutional, commercial and industrial settings. These sites include pipelines, utilities, hydroelectric dams, roadways, bridges, tunnels,shipyards, mining and roadways.

Duties of the position include:
  • site preparation and clean up
  • setting up and removing access equipment
  • assisting on concrete, masonry, steel, wood, and pre-cast erection projects
  • handling materials and equipment to perform demolition, excavation, and compaction activities
  • performing site safety and security checks
The program combines technical and work-based training. It generally takes two years to complete.

The technical training is made up of two levels. Each level is four weeks or 120 hours. The total is 8 weeks or 240 hours. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The program structure involves 4000 hours of work-based training. Based on a 30-hour work week this involves just over 133 weeks of training.

Advisor Tips
The ITA Standardized Written Exam is another requirement for each level. The passing grade is 70%.

The Red Seal endorsement allows qualified tradespeople to practice their trade anywhere in the country.  To receive this endorsement you must pass a Red Seal exam. Depending on your trade there is anywhere from 100 to 150 multiple choice questions on the exam. The passing grade is 70%.

There are currently 56 designated Red Seal trades in Canada.
