Applications may be submitted starting 11 months before the intended program start date. Early application is recommended. Applications are open on the first business day in October. Students are accepted on a first applied, first qualified basis. Early application is encouraged.

Admission Advice
1. If you are missing any requirements for admission, completing NIC's FSK 030 will help you meet the admission requirements. Alternatively, you also have the option of taking upgrading courses at NIC to help you get started and meet all the prerequisites.

2. Most employers require secondary school graduation as a standard for employment. If you do not have Grade 12 completion, you may wish to contact an educational advisor at NIC to discuss about upgrading and/or Grade 12 completion options.

English Language Requirements

Courses at NIC are taught in English. To be admitted directly into academic programs, you must meet the specific English proficiency requirements for your type of program.

If you are applying for Undergraduate Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs at NVIT, you must have completed one of the following:

English 12 (C)
English First Peoples 12 (C)
NIC ESL 092 (C+) and ESL 095 (C+)
Academic IELTS = overall score of 6.0, with no band below 5.5 (note: If you do not have a band score of IELTS 6.0 or higher in Reading and Writing, you will be required to take English 104)
TOEFL iBT = 80 overall with no subsection less than 19
TOEFL paper-based = 550 (Code 8538)
CAEL = 60 overall and writing 60
PTE Academic = 54 overall, with no component below 46
Equivalency as determined by North Island College Admissions Department

General Admission Requirements (All Students)

General Admission - One of:

High school graduation
Be at least 18 years old within the year you are applying to study
If under 18 years old and have not completed high school, NIC's Office of the Registrar may provide an alternative application for you

English Language Requirement - You must have proficiency in English at a level suitable for your desired program

In addition to general admission requirements, you must meet the program-specific admission requirements of your intended program.

BC Transfer Student

If you have completed some post-secondary studies at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at NIC. Please refer to NIC's Transfer Credit web page. The BC Transfer Guide allows you to check on the transferability of your courses taken at another BC post-secondary institution.

NIC will grant credit for formal learning gained at post-secondary institutions if the course objectives and material are equivalent to courses offered at NIC. Only credits, not grades, are transferred. Transfer credit may be used to meet program admission requirements or program requirements leading to a credential.

Transfer credit is not done automatically. Students are responsible for initiating the transfer credit process. To receive transfer credit, you must apply for transfer credit and submit official transcripts directly from the sending institution to NIC, along with Application for Transfer Credit Form. A detailed course description may also be required before credit can be evaluated.

Out-of-Province Transfer Student

Mature Student

For the purpose of waiving course prerequisite(s) in certain programs at NIC, mature students are defined as students who are at least 23 years old in the calendar year they will be studying and have reasonable potential for success based on previous work experience or other criteria.

Students choosing this option of declaring as a mature student need to meet all of the same academic standards, policies and academic deadline dates as those students who have met the prerequisites.

Students wishing to declare as a mature student for the purpose of waiving prerequisites are strongly encouraged to meet with an educational advisor before registering.

Other Student (including Special Consideration)

You must normally be at least 18 years old to attend North Island College. If under 18 years old, you may be admitted:

if you have secondary school graduation and will turn 18 years old before the end of the first calendar year of your post-secondary studies; or
by special request and discussion with an NIC counsellor.

Next Up: Apprenticeship or Modular

The Fabricator Welder Foundation Harmonized Certificate program prepares students to enter the Welder Apprenticeship training program. BC currently supports two streams for welder training: Modular and Apprenticeship.

There are two pathways for progression beyond the Welding Foundation/Welder C level:

Apprenticeship Training Option: Students with an employer sponsor will progress to Welder Apprentice Level 3, followed by the (optional) Specialty Metals Endorsement; or
Modular Training Option: Students without an employer sponsor will progress to Welder Level B followed by Welder Level A. Although modular levels Welding C, B and A are still available in some institutions, they are being replaced by the new Welder Apprenticeship training model, effective March 31, 2014.
