1) Program Admission Requirements


  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Preferably have been out of the public school system for at least one year
  • Complete Capilano University's math and/or writing assessment tests to determine appropriate placement in the program

Note: Exceptions may be made with departmental approval.

Admission Advice

1. Visit the Apply and Register for New ABE or CUP Students page for information about application and registration process. 

2. After submitting your online application, the University will email you an invitation to view the program's information session video and complete the required assessments. 

3. In order to know which Adult Basic Education (ABE) class is at the right level for you, you may need to take one or more assessment tests. The assessments (available for English, Math, and Sciences) have no academic value other than assisting instructors in placing students in the correct level for their studies. You cannot register for courses until you’ve completed the assessments.

4. Depending on assessment results, some students may be referred to the English for Academic Purposes (ESL) Department.


2) Institution Admission Requirements

Applicants also have to satisfy CapilanoU's institution admission requirements as listed below.

English Language Requirements


Students must meet one of the following:

  • English Studies 12 (C+) or English First Peoples 12 (C+) and two years of full-time high school education in Canada
  • Advanced Placement (AP) English Language/Composition or English Literature/Composition = at least a score of 4
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A higher level = at least a score of 5
  • At least four (4) consecutive years of full-time education in English in Canada, or another English-speaking country
  • At least four (4) consecutive years of full time education at an eligible English-speaking High School in a country where English is not the primary language
  • An English Language Assessment Test in one of:
    • TOEFL = at least a score of 560 paper-based or 83 internet-based
    • English Language Assessment (ELA) requirement = at least a score of 145
    • International English Language Testing System (Academic IELTS) = at least 6.5 overall and no sub score less than 6
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment = at least a score of 70
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) = at least a score of 56
    • DET (Duolingo English Test) = at least a score of 110 (note*: DET is accepted on a temporary basis until September 2021)
    • Language Proficiency Index Level 4 with an essay score of 26
  • Capilano University EAP 100 (B+) and EAP 101 (B+)
  • 6 credits of transferable English at the post-secondary level
  • Completion of a recognized degree program at an accredited university at which English is the primary language of instruction in a country where English is the principle language.

Students who do not qualify under one of the above requirements may submit a request for a waiver of the English Language Requirement form to the attention of Admissions in the Registrar's Office.

Other Student (including Special Consideration)

High school students with superior academic records may apply for limited admission which will allow enrollment in one or two university transfer courses while still attending secondary school.

The application must be co-signed by the applicant's parent or legal guardian and must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the school principal or designate, and an official copy of the secondary school academic record. Inquiries should be directed to the Registrar's Office.
