The apprenticeship pathway follows these steps: Partsperson 1, 2 and 3. Upon completing each level and the required work-based training hours, apprentices will be eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification exam. Upon completion of level 3, students will be eligible to write both the level 3 exam and Red Seal Parts exam.

Individuals who wish to begin an apprenticeship in this program must register with the ITA along with their sponsors. Application forms for all programs are available from the ITA website. Online registration is also available for most programs though the ITA website.
A "Parts and Warehousing Person 1" performs warehousing functions which include basic materials handling of all warehouse items such as automotive and industrial engines and equipment parts. This entry level position includes an introduction to warehouse operations, safety skills, equipment, and technology.
The program combines technical and work-based training.
The technical training is 90 hours (three weeks). This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, online, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.
The work-based training totals 1680 hours. Based on a 30-hour work week this involves 56 weeks of training.
