Individuals who wish to begin an apprenticeship in this program must register with the ITA along with their sponsors. Application forms for all programs are available from the ITA website. Online registration is also available for most programs though the ITA website.

Construction Electricians plan, design, assemble, install, alter, repair, verify, commission, connect, operate, maintain and decommission related electrical systems. Electrical systems provide heating, lighting, power, alarm, security, communication, and control in residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, marine and entertainment environments. 

The program combines technical and work-based training. It generally takes four years to complete.

The technical training is made up of four levels. Each level is 10 weeks (300 hours) for a total of 1200 technical training hours. The first three levels are Common Core Electrician. After the third level, students choose either Construction Electrician or Industrial Electrician for the fourth level training. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, online, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The work-based training totals 6000 hours. Based on a 30-hour work week this involves 200 weeks of training.

Industrial Electricians inspect, install, test, troubleshoot, repair and service industrial electrical equipment and related electrical and electronic controls. Service also includes calibration and preventative/predictive maintenance. Industrial electricians are employed by maintenance departments of plants, mines, smelters, oil and gas rigs, platforms, mills, shipyards, factories, and other industrial establishments. Some are employed by electrical contractors.
